Graceland - May 21, 2005

Tour of Southern States (6 of 9) :

Graceland is of course the legendary home of the King of Rock'n'Roll - Elvis Presley. It's in Memphis, Tennessee on the Mississippi. The Mansion is quite large. When Elvis bought it in 1958, it was about 10,000 square feet and had 13 acres of land. I think he had additional rooms and facilities like the raquet ball court added. So it could well be about 20,000 square feet.

There are a lot of rooms of course. The family bedrooms are not public - however you get to see all the public rooms of the mansion. There's an incredible collection of Gold and Platinum Disks in the trophy room - he was amazingly successful.

Elvis (and his parents and grandmother) are buried in the Meditation Garden in the grounds. It's very peaceful and nice. There are some other exhibitions of cars, memorabilia and his aircraft - however the house is the star of the show. You're provided with an audio tour and you're free to walk from room to room at your own pace - following the commentary. It's very well presented.
