Utah and Colorado - June 25, 2006

Summer Vacation 2006 (2 of 22) :

So, after 24 hours on the train we woke up in Salt Lake City, Utah. Another new state for Ali and I. I'm not sure if spending 6 hours looking out the window at a state counts as a visit or not. So we visited Utah again at Christmas 2006 and spent a night at Bluff, in the Canyonlands of Utah.

The train ground it's way forward into Colorado and started to follow the river towards the mountains. First Stop - Grand Junction. Tim and his fellow volunteers joined the train to provide a commentary. The River was originally called 'The Grand River' - hence Grand Junction, Grand Canyon and so on. However the politicians changed the name to the 'Colorado' in the 1920s to grace the river with the name of the State. Colorado means 'Colored Red'. After the river has passed through the most famous Canyon in the World, the water is slightly red from the sandstone.

The Colorado eventually makes it to the ocean in Mexico. However I believe not much water escapes into the sea as it's almost totally pumped for irrigation in the South West United States.

Eventually, only about 4 hours behind schedule, we arrived at Glenwood Springs where we'd planned 24 hours ashore to visit this famous spa resort for a swim, some running and to have dinner with some friends.
