Wall Drug is one of the most famous Drug Stores in the World. This is rather surprising because the town of Wall, South Dakota has a population of about 818! At some time in the past, a family owned and operated the drug store and had the vision to offer 'Free Iced Water' to everybody passing on their way to the Black Hills of Dakota - or even further west. They erected signs at the side of the roads (and later freeways). Well, in the days before air conditioned cars, everybody stopped at a place offering 'Free Iced Water'. Apparently, the signs got further and further away and today they even advertise on London busses in England! Yeah! On a cold wet Thursday Night in London, I can understand the attraction of going to Wall, South Dakota for 'Free Iced Water'. Of course, we had to visit. Indeed it's impressive in size - even if it's a little light on sophistication and taste. However it's a "must visit" if you're in South Dakota. In the town of Wall, there's also a museum about the Massacre at Wounded Knee. Very interesting. In fact, Ali and I were much more interested in the museum than the drug store. The events at Wounded Knee are a disgrace in the history of the United States. I'm not going to discuss that further. When we left Wall, we went to Rapid City to get groceries before proceeding to Custer State Park for an 8 day stay at the State Game Lodge. Rapid City has statues to many of the Presidents of the United States. Ali and I had a very pleasant walk in the town and photographed its very famous inhabitants.
