With the Boys

Yosemite National Park, California is one of the most beautiful places on Earth. And thanks to Dennis, we're able to appreciate the mountain trails above the valley. Dennis has led us on several expeditions in the valley - Half Dome twice and Clouds Rest. Thank you Dennis.

The first time we went to Yosemite was when the boys came to visit in March 2002. We bought the digital camera on the Friday and then headed off for the mountains - staying in Mariposa overnight. A really great weekend.

On other occasions we've stayed both in Yosemite Valley and in the Merced Gorge approach to the valley.

Our favorite place to stay is the Yosemite Bug - about 10 miles north of Mariposa and 25 miles south of Yosemite Park on Highway 140. It's a 'Rustic Mountain Resort'. It has cabins, home cooking, good value beer and wine and a log fireplace. It's a real get away from it kind of place: http://www.yosemitebug.com/.

We went to Yosemite with Jim and Sandy and family for the Thanksgiving Holiday in November 2006. It was to be a Striders run/walk weekend. However in the end various things conspired and it didn't work out as we hoped. However it did work out really well. We stayed at the Yosemite Bug and Mid-Pines again. First time in Winter. A little bit cold - but beautiful none the less.

The sun had set by the time we arrived on Thursday. So I put on my "Largs" kilt and we all had dinner. On Friday we went for a walk on "Four Mile Trail" - which is very beautiful and quite steep trail. It climbs about 2000 feet in a little over 4 miles. However the view at the top is quite stunning. From Glacier Point looking towards Half Dome is one of the best panoramas in the United States.

Saturday we went for lunch and a walk around the shops in Mariposa. Dinner and live entertainment in "The Bug" in the evening and then sadly it was time to return home on Sunday Morning. A drive along Highway 49 through the gold country was interesting - and then home on the freeway to San Jose.
