Vacation 2007

We had a vacation in two parts in 2007. We had 4 weeks away - the first 2 in England visiting family and friends. The second two weeks were spent touring the mid-west of the USA visiting friends, family bringing our state count to 46.

As always, I'm indebted to Penny for getting me to SFO airport. Penny you're a star. And of course it's always nice to go for lunch at Zack's in Milbrae before sitting in the 747 for 10 hours.

Vacation in England

When we got to England, I had a day and a half at home to see 'old' friends. Cliff and Rita and family with whom I used to run the Scouts. The neighbours Brian and Eileen. And we visited Elisabeth straight from Heathrow before she rushed off to Wales on a Duke of Edinburgh Award Expedition. Elisabeth's still very involved with youth activities in Surrey.

Then we set off for Cornwall for a family holiday. The second week of tennis was being played at Wimbledon. Need I say more? It was pouring rain a lot of the time we were away. Sunday and Friday were the only summer days - the others were like winter in California. However when the weather's nice, Cornwall is beautiful. It's the England of little villages and churches with towers. Miss Marple lives here somewhere, however we didn't get murdered and we weren't accused of murdering anybody else!

When we returned from Cornwall, we stayed with Jamie and Adele. We visited our neighbors David and Mary for dinner. Thanks guys - a splendid curry. And of course we caught up with their hectic lives. All very interesting stuff. Tuesday July 10 is Ali's birthday, so we'll have a farewell BBQ/Birthday party on Tuesday evening. Then Ali and I will set off for Washington, DC on Wednesday. Our next trip to England's planned for Christmas when I Holly will be walking and starting to speak. Looking forward lots to that.

Vacation in the USA

Ali and I have been making the effort to visit all 50 states in the United States of America. In addition to living in California for 7 years, we've had proper visits (at least a week) in Hawaii, Alaska, Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota, Texas, Oregon, Washington, Massachusetts, New York and Georgia. So we've really visited 12 states. To visit the others, we've had a few 'state hunting' trips when we drive from one state to another, spending a night in each state. A 24 hour visit is hardly enough time to know anything about the place - however at least we've been to them all this way. 31 states have had the 1 or 2 night treatment and in about 7 we've visited without staying overnight.

On this trip we're going to make first-time visits to Delaware, West Virginia, Kenntucky, Indiana, Ohio, Mitchigan and Wisconsin. Along the way we're going to visit friends and family in Indiana, Ohio and Minnesota. Ali's going to make up the two states of Illinois and Minnesota where I've visited on business. So at the end of this trip our state counts will both be 46. Only Idaho, Oklahoma, Missouri and Kansas remain and we might visit them later this year.

We're really looking forward to our visit to Indiana where we'll meet my TNT buddy Jill and her family. Jill's getting married in September and as well as renewing our friendship with Jill, her Mom and her sister, we're going to meet more of Jill's family and her husband to be. We're also looking forward to visiting Josh, Morag and Katya in Ohio and Santhi's family in Minnesota.
