Photos of Fall Trip 2008

Here are my photos from a really great trip in the Pacific North West of the United States. The purpose of the trip was to meet our friends the Dermers from Seattle and visit their daughter Lina who lives in Halfway, Oregon. The adventure was to hill-walk in the Eagle Cap Wilderness and to go on a Jet boat ride in Hells Canyon, the deepest canyon in the United States.

On the way to Halfway, we visited Mt Shasta, California and Crater Lake National Park, Oregon. On the return we visited Boise, Idaho and Virginia City, Nevada. A couple of sub-plots of this trip were to visit Idaho and bring our state count to 47. I was also keen to see Reno and for Ali to visit Virginia City where I visited a few years ago with Carlo after the Tahoe Marathon.

So lots of fun. Lots of miles. Reunion with old friends, visited some new places and increased our State count. Just a great trip.

I'd like to say a words of thanks for our hosts in Halfway, Oregon. We stayed with Mike, Hans and Lisa. It was incredibly nice. Thanks very much guys for making us so welcome - we hope to return the hospitality to you in California.

Day What we did

Tuesday September 2, 2008

We drove from San Jose to Mt Shasta. About 350 miles. We stopped at Redding to look at the Sundial Suspension Bridge. Stayed overnight at the Finlandia Motel in Mt Shasta. Ran by the lake. We enjoyed using the sauna at the Finlandia - brings back happy days in Finland. Photos: click here.

Wednesday September 3, 2008

We drove up Mt Shasta and went for a couple of short hikes on the mountain. Nothing stenuous or far. Maybe 3 miles in total. Then drove up to Klamath Falls and stayed at the Quality Inn. Nice walk and dinner at a Thai Restaurant. Photos: click here.

Drove to Crater Lake National Park. Simply great day. Drove round the lake. Went for the Ranger led hike to Watchman Tower for sunset. Very beautiful and interesting. Drove to Bend, OR and stayed in the Shilo Inn. It was 11pm by the time we got there. Very nice hotel and very good value. Photos: click here.

Friday September 5, 2008

Nice run by the river and golf course in Bend. About 5 miles - really enjoyed it. And then a long 260 mile drive on 'surface roads' to Halfway, Oregon. Didn't take any photos today. Arrived at Mike and Hans and Lisa's. What nice hosts - we're delighted to be here. Thanks for your hospitality. Very nice dinner and early to bed.

Saturday September 6, 2008

Didn't get up til 9am - so no run today. Mike made huge pancakes - good preparation for quite a long hike 12 mile hike in the Eagle Cap Wilderness. Lisa was our guide. She knows the mountains from being involved with the lama packing expedition business which takes place here. Another nice dinner and early to bed. Photos: click here.

A Jet boat trip down the Snake River in Hell's Canyon. The river is the boundary between Idaho and Oregon. Hell's Canyon is deeper than the Grand Canyon, however not nearly so long or wide. Expensive fun - $140 for a day out. However very interesting and enjoyable. Marvellous boat, captain and tour guide. Nice lunch, beautiful weather. And of course this brings our state count to 47 when we had lunch on the Idaho side of the river. Photos: click here.

Monday September 8, 2008

After we got up and said our goodbyes to friends Rich and Denise and our wonderful hosts Mike and Lisa, we went to the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center which we had to pass to reach I-84. This was very interesting. And afterwards we drove to Boise, Idaho and stayed there for the night. Photos: click here.

Long boring drive across the Nevada basin to Reno. This wasn't as boring as I feared. It's high desert with mountains along the way. It's rather beautiful in a rugged kind of way. No photos today.

Wednesday September 10, 2008

Visited Virginia City. I've been there before, however Ali has not. Time to level that one. I think the only place in the USA that I've been and Ali has not is Atlanta, Georgia (business trip in 1988). We also visited the State Capitol in Carson City, Nevada before driving home to San Jose. It's been a great trip. Photos: click here.
