Fall Trip 2008 (10 of 10) :

We stayed overnight in Reno, Nevada. We weren't impressed with Reno. It looked quite squalid and dirty and our hotel wasn't very nice at all. Although I've been within a few miles of Reno, I've never been downtown before. And now I have, and I doubt if we'll be back!

On Wednesday we went to visit Virginia City. That was great. Very interesting and the weather was perfect. Nice lunch on a restaurant with a balcony overlooking the mines.

Virginia City was the site of the Comstock Lode. This was a huge silver find which financed the Civil War. There are also Gold and other mineral deposits in the area. The official tag of the State of Nevada is "The Silver State" and this is a direct reference to the mines at Virginia City. It's a real wild west gold mining town. The main street was mostly gambling saloons. Today of course, there are also restaurants, gift and novelty shops. It's Victorian in the 21st Century. Well worth a visit - the place has loads of character and charm.

On the way home to San Jose, we stopped at the State Capitol of Nevada in Carson City. Very interesting. The building houses the offices of the top politians in Nevada - the Governor, Secretary of State and so on. The State Legislature is nearby in a more modern building. We'll visit that on another occasion. The 'old' Senate is now a museum and the 'old' House is a meeting room.

On the way back home, the car topped 100,000 miles. We've never had a car do so many miles and we've never had a car for 8 years. The car's in very good condition and running well. Keeping it in the basement parking lot has clearly done it a lot of good. It never sits out in the rain. There is never frost and ice in San Jose, so the car has never been subject to salt from the road. It has been a very good buy.
