Friday May 9. 7th day of adventure and time to leave Death Valley and head for Grand Canyon. Too far for a single day, so we were going to stop in Las Vegas. We've never been to Vegas - so this seemed a good half way point.
We really enjoyed our time in Death Valley. It is very beautiful. I bet it's unbelievably hot in Summer. Anyway the road out of Death Valley to the South East was going to take us behind Golden Canyon. And we wanted to visit Dante's View which is 5000 feet above Badwater Basin.
It was very beautiful. The view from Zabriskie Pt over Red Cathedral and into Death Valley is very dramatic. I'm sure we enjoyed it even more because we'd walked in Golden Canyon the day before. In fact, while in Golden Canyon, I saw the signs for Zabriskie Pt - however I didn't realise that would bring you out on a road. For sure, you don't wander about in Death Valley without a map. You don't want to get lost in a place like that.
And Dante's View is very impressive. The colors in Death Valley are very spectactular and interesting. They're not brilliant colors - they're pastals of red, yellow and green rocks. And of course the white of the sand of the evaporated lake, the blue of the sky and the dark shadows of the mountains. It's quite amazing.
The road out of Death Valley goes through 'Death Valley Junction' which has a hotel, a couple of shops and an Opera House. Eh? Yes. Have to find out more about that another day.
