Summer Vacation 2008 (17 of 19) :

I've always liked the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright - although I'll honestly say that I don't know a lot about it. And I'd always associated him with Chicago and the mid-west. So it was a surprise to discover that Wright established his school of architectures in the Arizona Dessert in what is today Scottsdale, AZ.

We went on the guided tour. It felt very expensive at $32 each, but we paid up and hoped it would be worth it. Indeed it was. It was fascinating. The house and the furniture and everything is quite stunning. Although the place is clearly getting old - Mr Wright died in 1960 - the style and lines are almost contemporary. The influence of Wright on 20th Century American Architecture cannot be overstated.

And then we had lunch before leaving Rich and Denise to enjoy the rest of their vacation together. Thanks for buying lunch guys. And thanks for your company. It's been really great to visit Grand Canyon and you made this happen.

I'd like to mention the huge contribution to our life that the Dermers have made. Rich is a Senior Engineer at Adobe in Seattle and provided the req on which I was invited to come to the States. So all of the adventures in the last 8 years have been due in some small or large measure to their influence. We simply wouldn't have come to live in America without Rich's help. Thanks Guys.

We didn't take the shortest route back to San Jose. Instead we decided to drive to San Diego and see how things are there. So when we left the Dermers, it was about 400 miles across the desert to reach Southern California just after dark. Some beautiful mountain scenery along the way near the Mexican border.
