One of many eccentric aspects of Scottish culture is the Burns Supper. This is a dinner held to celebrate the life and work of Robert Burns, the National Poet. Robert Burns was born on was January 25, 1759. This is the first time we have attended a Burns Supper in the Bay Area and we were joined at the South Bay Scottish Society by Lesley & Graham, Joyce, Deborah and Dennis. Ali's dancing friends Star & Jamie joined our table. There was the usual ritual of the piping and addressing of the haggis, the dinner, speeches and dancing. All just fine. There was a raffle, and I won a 6-pack of Scottish beer. Dennis' dreams came true when he won a calendar about sheep. Being from New Zealand, he was delighted to add this to his collection. Graham's a very good and enthusiastic cook and set his sights on making a haggis and hosting the supper in his home in January 2011. That'll be lots of fun - both in the planning and on the night. Thanks everybody for your company and we look forward to addressing and serving Graham's haggis 'with big broad slight' in January 2011. Lightbox click here - 754 kBytes download |
