Big Sur International Marathon (3 of 4) :

Gustavo and I ran the 10.6 miler event at BSIM. It's a rather odd distance and it's this way to suit the course. I'm sure they could easily make the course up to the Half Marathon distance of 13.1 miles. You have to be bussed to the start of the event. So that means joining the bus at 6am in Carmel for a 7:30 start at Rocky Point Restaurant. Out of bed at 5:30am.

It was foggy and chilly at the restaurant. I kept my clothes on put them into the drop-bag a few minutes before running. The bag drop bus was about ¼ mile down the course. The run is just great. The course is really beautiful. I've run the full 26.2 mile marathon here a couple of times and the hills are a grind in the full event. Not today. Very easy. All the fun of finishing the Marathon and none of the pain!

Gustavo did really well. He rocketed off at the start and I didn't see him again. He beat my by 10 minutes and was 3rd in his division. A very credible achievement for a first event. I'm delighted to say that I was first in my division (from 29), despite the time I spent taking 40 photos along the way.

I also met some nice running buddies. Dawn and Christine came from Phoenix, Arizona to run and enjoyed the nice cool weather on the coast. The Singh family from Cupertino came and I enjoyed running with Jignasa.

I was finished by 9:30 and we didn't expect Michelle until almost noon. So Ali and I went back to the hotel to shower and change. Michelle had just finished when we got back. She did really well 4:15 - a terrific improvement from 3 years ago.

Well done everybody. Great results for us all.
