The Kronikles of Tony and Ruth

Day 31 - Sunday 30 July 2006

Another brilliant sunshiny day. A butcherbird turns its nose up at the muesli I offer. I guess it’s called a butcherbird for good reason; wants meat. After coffee at a riverside café we are on a mission to find fresh fish. The fishery is closed but the owner graciously opens up and soon there is a queue of people behind us. The fishmonger is in good humour though and we buy barramundi and silver bream that we deposit in the motel fridge then go shopping in town. The place is chock-a-block. There is fascinating artwork mosaic alongside the footpath. Shopping completed, with the top off the cabriolet, we drive to the coast.

A wonderful world opens up. The several lookouts (Rotary, Captain Cook etc.) reveal a grand sight. Spectacular mountains, beaches, Nambucca River mouth, golden sands, boats entering and leaving the river and surfers enjoying dense, well shaped waves are laid out below us. I’m getting raving exhaustion and so must you. Down at the beach we have a heart lifting walk and watch a set of dogs cavorting in the sun and surf. It’ so entertaining.

After lunch and powernap we watch the Cats play their usual catch-up game so more powernap and when I wake up Geelong is further behind. This was going to be their big year. So disappointing.

Sue’s phone call cheers us up – the Rickeys will be in Nambucca Heads tonight. We book them into the motel and take the boardwalk to the white Albatross where an R & B band is belting it out. Forced onto the balcony where we can hear each other we enjoy a couple of beers then go back to catch Darryl and Sue pulling up in their Merc coupe. It’s great to meet up with friends away from home.

Over dinner at the services club Darryl brings us up to speed on their travels. They have met up with Geoff Thorpe and Co who have been test sailing their recent purchase of a $2 million catamaran near Cairns - “and it was the smallest vessel in the marina”.
