Outside the picture window, in the morning at seven, the same group of surfers are riding the wind and rain lashed mongrel waves. It's as if they had been at it all night. With full tums we drive to The Blowhole where Ruth gets information on Canberra and I bid a fond farewell to the churning ocean at the hole. On the northern side of the point waveriders are enjoying neat lines of medium sized surf.
Having had our mandatory fix of caffeine we roll down Hwy1that offers a changing scene of mountains, towns and seascapes. As we drop south we pass through range of weather conditions: half baked sunshine, leaden skies, rain and high winds. More tall forests, mountain passes and pastures dotted with cows and sheep pass before we arrive in Batemans Bay in welcome sunshine and blue skies.
We passed this place on the northward trek on day four but I can't remember it. The town is crowded with people having an outdoor Sunday lunch with a background of pelicans, fishing boats and the ever sparkling sea. Lunch is delicious tomato lentil soup.
On the windy Kings Hwy mountain pass I engage the Sports function on the gear console and we enjoy zipping around the tight curves. After Braidwood the topography changes from mountainous to gently rolling hills. After passing Queanbeyan we enter the circles of Canberra. Attempting to find accommodation we learn that parliament is sitting and what suites remain vacant are absolutely ghastly. Being pooped we settle on one of these depressing rooms where Ruth gets on the "dog and bone" booking us into Capital Executive Apartments for Monday and Tuesday.
It's cold and dark when we set out to find the local services club. Somehow we miss it and finish up in a cosy oasis of eateries. In a friendly, bustling resto we tuck into our skilfully zapped steaks. $7 bus us the fare back to the motel where, as usual we have some wine, watch TV, shower and hop into bed. It's 10PM
