Chirp, bloody chirp. Another sun drenched day and do the rosellas care that I have a slight hangover? No! Their little beaks are barking away. Rex and Anne have sporting commitments today so Ruth and I plan to visit Byron Bay. We head off. At Ballina the roof of our cabriolet is retracted and the interior is flooded with sunshine. Lovely.
The view from the point at Lennox Head is ravishing. Line after line of surf stretching from the point to the beach a kilometre away. A crowd of surfers is enjoying the large sets. A sight such as this would lift any depression.
Lunch at Byron Bay consists of salmon on sourdough grilled, for Ruth and a roasted vegie stack for me. The food and coffee are very good.
We stagger around the trendy shopping area trying to find something unique but we should have known better: I finish up buying a T-Shirt with a “Byron Bay” logo. Ruth cannot find anything. Why is everyone selling the same stuff, all for super skinny people!
On the way back we visit the Cape Byron lighthouse. Again the views are: WOW! Surf combed beaches stretching away to the horizon on both sides of the Cape. Surfers are giving the swell a good working over.
On arrival to Evans Head we drive around a corner and come upon the sight of hundreds of people in dazzling white outfits, bowling black biased balls. I must buy stronger sunglasses.
Back At Rex’s Noel and Marion arriving in their flash, midnight blue Merc convertible greet us. We have not seen them for years. At this point I must say that meeting up with friends truly makes this trip memorable. We are truly blessed to know Rex, Anne, Noel, and Marion together with friends we are yet to meet on this journey. While the Armstrongs are settling in, Ruth and I sneak off to the pub for a couple sherbets.
The fish, squid, bugs and prawns are BBQ’d by Ruthie and the six of us tuck in. Great food! We drink piss and shoot shit and again have a great time recalling our experiences of past years.
